Some Fields Experience Planting Delays Due to the Effects of May Floods
Recent sunny days across much of Rio Grande do Sul have contributed to the rice planting efforts in the region. According to a report from the Rio Grande do Sul Rice Institute (Irga) released on Thursday (October 31), sowing has reached 579,253 hectares, which represents 61.08% of the projected area of 948,356 hectares for the 2024/25 harvest.
The Fronteira Oeste region is the furthest along in the rice sowing process, with 215,565 hectares planted, or 76.57% of the estimated 281,542 hectares. The Southern Zone, which was the last region to start sowing, has already planted 60.97% of the projected 165,986 hectares.
Ênio Coelho, coordinator for the Central region at Irga, notes that the weather has been favorable in recent days. “Looking at the progress of sowing from last Wednesday to this week, it is clear that the climatic conditions have aided the sowing efforts across all regions,” he states.
However, Coelho emphasizes that some fields are experiencing delays in planting due to the lingering effects of the May floods in Rio Grande do Sul. “Producers are currently focused on reconstructing their areas,” he adds.
