Italian, French, and Greek Delicacies Dominate the International Ranking

Brazilian cheeses have garnered recognition on the global stage, with three varieties featured in the prestigious Taste Atlas ranking of the world’s best cheeses. This accolade highlights the unique flavors and traditional techniques that have been perfected over the years in Brazil.

The Taste Atlas, an American culinary encyclopedia, based its rankings on public reviews, placing Italy’s Parmigiano Reggiano—produced in the Parma region—at the top. Although Brazilian cheeses did not make the top tier, the following three received notable mentions: Canastra (24th), Minas (78th), and Coalho (83rd).

Highlights of Brazilian Cheeses:

1. Queijo Canastra

Queijo Canastra

This cheese, characterized by its yellow rind and soft interior, derives its name from the Serra da Canastra region in Minas Gerais. It can only be labeled as Canastra if made according to traditional recipes and produced in specific municipalities. Recognized as a Brazilian cultural and immaterial heritage by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan), it is made from raw milk and aged for 21 to 40 days.

2. Queijo Minas

Crafted from raw cow’s milk, this artisanal cheese is known for its soft, moist texture and mildly salty flavor. Originating in Minas Gerais, it is now enjoyed across Brazil in various culinary preparations and is often recommended by nutritionists for its relatively lower calorie and fat content. Minas Gerais boasts over 30,000 cheese producers, with nearly 10,000 dedicated to Minas cheese, producing over 40,000 tons annually.

3. Queijo Coalho

Initially from the Northeast region of Brazil, Queijo Coalho has spread across the country and has become a popular accompaniment at barbecues, served alongside meats and snacks or enjoyed fresh in sandwiches and salads. It is characterized by its white, firm texture, thin rind, salty flavor, moderate to high moisture content, and light acidity. Research from the Federal University of Pernambuco in 2012 indicated that Queijo Coalho may help prevent diseases like cancer due to bioactive peptides found in milk.
