Partnership targets production of up to one million metric tons of SAF inputs by 2035

Corteva, a multinational specializing in seeds, crop protection, and biologicals, and BP, the British energy giant, announced plans to establish a strategic partnership. The collaboration aims to develop low-carbon bioinputs for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The initiative involves creating a joint venture to produce and supply raw materials derived from agricultural crops such as mustard, sunflower, and canola for SAF production.

Production Goals and Sustainability

The partnership aims to achieve a production capacity of up to one million metric tons of SAF inputs by 2035. This collaboration will support global sustainability goals, particularly those of the European Union (EU), which mandates a minimum 20% use of SAF in airports by 2025, rising to 70% by 2050.

Agricultural Partnerships

Corteva plans to work with farmers across North America, South America, and Europe to cultivate seeds specially developed for producing bioinputs. These will comply with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and the U.S. low-carbon incentive policies.

“This partnership demonstrates that agriculture can remain a vital part of the solution to global decarbonization opportunities,” said Brook Cunningham, Corteva’s Chief Strategy Officer.

BP’s Role and Future Plans

Emma Delaney, BP’s Executive Vice President for Customers and Products, highlighted the collaboration’s potential: “Together, we are well-positioned to deliver value by leveraging Corteva’s technology, relationships with growers, and BP’s refining and marketing capabilities.”

The agreement is expected to be finalized by 2025, with operations commencing later that year.
