The Maranhão Grain Terminal (Tegram) at the Port of Itaqui completed its first sorghum shipment on Monday (Nov. 4), destined for the European market. Traditionally, the terminal handles soybean, corn, and soybean meal.

The shipment, bound for Spain, includes sorghum produced in the states of Maranhão and Piauí, along with corn. The shipment was carried out by TCN (Terminal Corredor Norte), one of Tegram’s consortia members, and comes at a time of expanding infrastructure at the terminal.

According to Marcos Pepe Bertoni, an executive at Tegram, the goal is to solidify the position of the Port of Itaqui as “the largest grain export complex in the Northern Brazilian Arc.”

“We set a record for grain movement last year, and we are preparing to support the growth of agricultural production in the Mapito region (Maranhão, Piauí, and Tocantins) and northeastern Mato Grosso in the coming years,” said Bertoni.

In 2023, Tegram exported 15 million tons of grains, and to keep up with increasing demand, the terminal is investing in the construction of a new docking pier and expanding its operational capacity by 8.5 million tons, with an investment of R$ 1.5 billion.
