Brazil’s cotton production for the 2024/25 season is expected to reach 3.89 million tons, representing a 5.6% increase over the 3.68 million tons harvested in 2023/24.
- Planting Progress:
The current planting stage is at 0.17% of the projected area, with activity concentrated in Paraná (45%) and São Paulo (19%). - Expansion in Cultivated Area:
The planted area is forecast to grow 7.9%, reaching 2.15 million hectares. This figure aligns with Abrapa’s projection of 2.14 million hectares but surpasses Conab’s estimate of 2 million hectares.
Key Producing Regions
Mato Grosso
- Dominance in Production:
Mato Grosso remains Brazil’s largest cotton producer, accounting for 73% of the national planted area. - Area Growth:
Planted area is set to expand 6.9%, reaching 1.56 million hectares, with 82% planted during the second season and 18% during the first season. - Production Forecast:
Cotton output in the state is projected at 2.77 million tons, a 4.2% increase over 2023/24.
Bahia
- Production Hub:
The West of Bahia accounts for 98% of the state’s cotton planting. - Area Expansion:
The planted area is expected to grow 10%, reaching 380,000 hectares, or 18% of Brazil’s total cotton area. - Production Growth:
Output in Bahia is anticipated to increase by 10%, reaching 748,000 tons. The decline in soybean and corn prices has prompted renewed interest in cotton, attracting both experienced and new producers.
Contribution of Mato Grosso and Bahia
Together, these two states are responsible for 90% of Brazil’s cotton area:
- Mato Grosso: 73%
- Bahia: 18%
The remaining 10% of the area is distributed among other states, with notable growth in regions like Minas Gerais, as well as emerging agricultural frontiers in Piauí and Maranhão.
