Consultancy estimates a harvest of 7.35 million tons
The consultancy firm Safras & Mercado has revised its projection for Brazil’s 2024 wheat production, reducing it from 7.93 million to 7.35 million tons. The initial forecast was 9.195 million tons. In 2023, Brazil produced 8.85 million tons of wheat.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul is expected to harvest 3.55 million tons, while Paraná’s output is projected at 2.38 million tons.
Elcio Bento, an analyst at Safras & Mercado, highlighted that Brazil’s wheat production continues to be impacted by adverse weather conditions. “After a reduction in planted area, water scarcity hindered sowing efforts. The prolonged drought further affected crop development, particularly in Paraná,” he noted in a statement.
Other states, such as Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Mato Grosso do Sul, also experienced losses in their wheat harvests. In Rio Grande do Sul, rains during the harvest period affected grain quality.
Together, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul account for over 80% of Brazil’s wheat production.
