Delays Persist Only in the Central Region of the State
The 2024/25 rice planting season in Rio Grande do Sul has covered 84.11% of the estimated area, with 797,702 hectares already sown out of a planned total of 948,356 hectares. This data was reported by the Rio Grande do Sul Rice Institute (Instituto Rio Grandense do Arroz, or Irga).
Regional Progress in Planting
- Fronteira Oeste: 93.44% of the area planted.
- Planície Costeira Externa: 91.27%, nearing completion.
- Planície Costeira Interna: 86.11%.
- Campanha: 87.42%.
- Zona Sul: 82.91%.
- Região Central: 53.46%, significantly delayed due to earlier flooding in May.
Challenges in the Central Region
According to Ênio Coelho, agronomist and coordinator for the Central region at Irga, the late planting in the region reflects the aftermath of the May floods. Many farmers are still in the process of rebuilding and preparing their fields. “The planting intentions set at the beginning of the season may not be fully realized, as numerous areas still require adjustments and recovery,” Coelho noted.
Positive Outlook in Other Regions
Vagner Martini dos Santos, coordinator for the Planície Costeira Externa, described the progress in his region as favorable. “We are close to completing the planting. Weather conditions have been supportive this year. The establishment of the crops is excellent, with good planting conditions and strong development, creating a positive scenario for the season,” Santos explained.
