A typical dish that sparks debate, but pleases more than half of Brazilians, says research

As each year passes, the debate over the rice served at Christmas dinners continues to heat up. Some people believe the carb should be enhanced with raisins, carrots, walnuts, and whatever else one’s imagination allows. Others argue that the traditional version is the tastiest.

The debate is, indeed, fierce. However, a survey conducted by C. Lab, Nestlé’s research laboratory, showed that 53% of Brazilians refuse to skip the controversial dish during the holiday season. With that in mind, Globo Rural has prepared an easy recipe for those on the “rice with raisins” team.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 cups of rice
  • 2 packets of chicken-flavored bouillon
  • 4 cups of boiling water
  • 1 cup black raisins
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • If desired, add carrots, cashews, almonds, or other dried fruits

Instructions:

  1. In a pan, heat the butter and sauté the rice.
  2. Add the boiling water and dissolve the chicken bouillon in the mixture. Cook on low heat for 15 minutes, or until the rice is dry.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and add the raisins and walnuts. Cover the pan, let it rest for another 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving dish.
  4. Using a slotted spoon, remove any walnuts that float to the surface. Press each walnut between your fingers to easily remove the skin.

This recipe yields six servings and takes 30 minutes to prepare.
