According to IBGE, the country now has the capacity to store 222.3 million tons of grains.
Brazil increased its grain storage capacity by 5.4% in the first half of 2024 compared to the second half of 2023, reaching 222.3 million tons, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The institute found that the number of storage facilities during this period totaled 9,424, a 3.5% increase over the second half of 2023.
By region, the state of Rio Grande do Sul had the highest number of storage facilities, with 2,444 units. Meanwhile, Mato Grosso has the largest storage capacity at 59.2 million tons, the institute reported.
In the first half of 2024, all major regions of the country saw increases in the number of storage facilities: North (24.0%), Central-West (5.5%), Southeast (0.2%), South (1.3%), and Northeast (3.3%).
Agricultural stocks totaled 87.9 million tons, a 15.5% increase from 76.1 million tons on June 30, 2023, according to IBGE.
Regarding the five main agricultural products stored in these facilities, soybean stocks accounted for the largest volume (43.3 million tons), followed by corn (32.7 million tons), rice (5.0 million tons), wheat (2.6 million tons), and coffee (0.8 million tons). These products together make up 96.1% of the total stockpiled among the items monitored by this survey.
IBGE also reported that silos remain the dominant storage structure in the country. Silos reached a total capacity of 117.5 million tons, representing 52.9% of the total usable capacity. Compared to the second half of 2023, silos saw a 6.8% increase in capacity in the first half of this year, the institute concluded.
