Drinks, grains, and cereals top the IBGE and Ministry of Health survey.
Have you ever wondered what foods are most consumed by Brazilians? According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), coffee leads the list, followed by beans and rice. The list is rounded out by two beverages: juices and soft drinks.
The daily per capita consumption of the leading food in the Personal Food Consumption Analysis survey reached 163.2 grams, which is close to beans at 142.2 grams and rice at 131.4 grams (see the complete list at the end of the article).
This IBGE survey, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health, analyzed consumers aged ten and older by sex, age, family income, and urban or rural status.
Beans and rice, a common combination in Brazilian meals, showed a decline in consumption compared to the previous survey. Bean consumption fell from 72.8% to 60%, while rice dropped from 84% to 76.1%. This decline was mainly observed in the South, Southeast, and Midwest regions.
Interestingly, beans and rice are more consumed in households with lower incomes, while households with higher incomes prioritize fruits.
Other frequently consumed foods include beef, vegetables, beer, processed foods, corn, cassava flour, bread, and fish.
